DAY 9 – Taking The Kingdom to the Marketplace

Mark 16:17-18 says: “These are some of the signs that will accompany believers: They will throw out demons in my name, they will speak in new tongues, they will take snakes in their hands, they will drink poison and not be hurt, they will lay hands on the sick and make them well.” I love this scripture because it says what we can expect to see accompany us as we walk out our faith here on earth. It builds expectancy for more, but also it reveals that we have not yet arrived. At least not in our North American culture. I can say in my life, that I have gotten a taste, but I have not yet seen what all this scripture implies we will!

I am convinced that one of the reasons I haven’t is because I am mostly surrounded with like minded individuals. My time in the marketplace is very limited. I work in a Christian school, I go to church meetings and studies. The majority of my time is spent on my family, my vocation and my friends. (With like minded people). I am not trying to belittle this, it’s very very important. There are times and seasons for everything. I do feel however that tension in my life to begin to build bridges into my community. That feeling in my gut that God has more, and it’s beyond my circle and comfort zone. Jesus’ first miracle happened with family (turning water to wine), he also had some with those friends and people he loved (raising Lazarus from the dead, healing Peter’s mother in law). The majority of Jesus’ miracles and soon the apostles, happened in the marketplace (on the streets as they went about their day). Read the book of John, it’s filled with miracles!

My heart is to see myself so attuned to the Holy Spirit that the above is something that is happening everyday in my life! That’s my heart for the church! That the signs and wonders would accompany us, they would open the door to share the Gospel and people would come to the knowledge of the love of God!

PERSONAL PRAYER: Lord give me a sensitivity to the spirit in every moment through my day, that those whose path I cross would be influenced and encouraged because of it.

CORPORATE PRAYER: God give us as a church community specific strategies  and creative ideas of how to reach into the community we are in .

Pray this scripture from Habakkuk 3:2(MSG) that God would renew the signs and wonders in our time, make them known:  “God, I’ve heard what our ancestors say about you and I’m stopped in my tracks, down on my knees. Do among us what you did among them. Work among us as you worked among them. And as you bring judgment, as you surely must, remember mercy.”
